Mercedes unveils 1,341-hp electric hypercar concept

Mercedes-Benz today unveiled its most powerful electric vehicle concept yet, the AMG GT XX, a four-door hypercar that produces 1,341 horsepower and can reach speeds exceeding 223 mph. The concept car showcases revolutionary motor technology and ultra-fast charging capabilities that will underpin the German automaker's next generation of high-performance electric vehicles.

The GT XX represents Mercedes' answer to growing competition in the electric supercar segment and signals the brand's commitment to electrifying its AMG performance division. A production version is expected to arrive in 2026, replacing the current AMG GT Four Door.

Revolutionary Motor Technology

The concept employs three compact axial flux motors developed by British company YASA, which Mercedes acquired in 20211. Two motors power the rear axle while a third drives the front wheels when additional traction is needed1. These motors are considerably smaller than conventional electric motors—measuring just 3.1 to 3.5 inches wide—yet deliver three times the power density23.

"We can get performance like hell," Denis Blanusa, the concept's battery development lead, told Autoweek4. The tri-motor setup enables torque vectoring and allows the car to operate as rear-wheel drive when the front motor decouples1.

Charging and Battery Innovation

Perhaps most notable is the GT XX's charging capability. The 800-volt battery system can sustain an average charging rate of 850 kilowatts, adding approximately 248 miles of range in just five minutes12. This surpasses current charging infrastructure capabilities, though Mercedes plans to deploy compatible ultra-fast chargers in its network next year2.

The battery features direct oil cooling technology derived from Mercedes' Formula 1 program, with 3,000 individual cells cooled to maintain optimal temperature during aggressive driving2.

Sound and Experience

Recognizing that electric vehicles must appeal to traditional performance car enthusiasts, Mercedes equipped the GT XX with a sophisticated sound system that mimics a V8 engine12. External speakers mounted behind the headlights produce sound effects indexed to accelerator position and wheel speed1.

"Bringing hardcore V8 fans to an electric vehicle is something that is definitely a challenge," Chief Technology Officer Markus Schäfer told Auto Express2. During executive testing, one board member declared it "the best V8 we have ever developed," according to AMG CEO Michael Schiebe1.

The concept builds on Mercedes' earlier Vision One-Eleven concept from 2023 and reflects the company's broader electrification strategy3. The electric supercar market, valued at $55.41 billion in 2024, is projected to reach $111.71 billion by 20304.
