Kraft Heinz Foods Company recalled nearly 368,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer turkey bacon products Wednesday over potential listeria contamination, marking the latest in a series of food safety incidents that have heightened scrutiny of the industry's testing protocols. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced no illnesses have been confirmed in connection with the recalled products, which were distributed nationwide and exported to the British Virgin Islands and Hong Kong.
The recall affects fully cooked turkey bacon produced between April 24 and June 11 at the company's Newberry, South Carolina facility, discovered through routine laboratory testing that indicated potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
Three product varieties are affected: 12-ounce packages with use-by dates from July 18 to August 2, 36-ounce multi-packs with dates from July 23 to September 4, and 48-ounce packages with dates from July 18 to September 412. The products bear specific lot codes including RS19, RS40, and RS42, with UPC numbers ranging from 071871548601 to 0718715487933.
Kraft Heinz shares fell 1.5% Thursday following the announcement, adding to the company's nearly 13% year-to-date decline4. The stock has faced pressure from various operational challenges throughout 2025, according to Investopedia4.
"At Kraft Heinz, nothing matters more to us than the safety of our products and the well-being of the families who trust them," a company spokesperson told Fox Business1. The company confirmed it has received no consumer illness reports as of July 3 and is working with retail partners to remove potentially affected products from circulation2.
The USDA advises consumers to discard the products or return them to stores for refunds3. Those with questions can contact Kraft Heinz at 800-280-7185 or email consumerrelations@kraftheinz.com4.
Listeria infections pose particular risks to pregnant women, newborns, adults over 65, and immunocompromised individuals, potentially causing fever, muscle aches, and in severe cases, convulsions1. The CDC estimates approximately 1,600 Americans contract listeriosis annually, with about 260 deaths1.
The recall follows federal officials' December announcement of revamped protocols to prevent listeria infections after several high-profile outbreaks, including one linked to Boar's Head deli meats that resulted in 10 deaths and more than 60 illnesses1.
"Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider," the FSIS stated2.
